Cheryl Donegan's recent paintings and videos syphon art history through high fashion and quotidian culture, irreverently challenging the bizarrely coded roles and traditions that continue to underpin contemporary art practice. Employing off-brand fabrics, motifs, and patterns, as well as clothing such as jackets bought on eBay, Donegan appropriates the language of fashion in a self-aware and humorous critique of the role taste (and novelty) plays within ideas surrounding painterly abstraction and the ready-made.
